Is GTA 6 the newest GTA game?
GTA 6 will be the newest mainline Grand Theft Auto once it releases on November 19, 2026. Until that day, GTA 5, which launched in 2013, remains the most recent numbered entry, which is why it is still the newest GTA you can actually buy and play right now.
The mainline series in order is Grand Theft Auto (1997), GTA 2 (1999), GTA III (2001), Vice City (2002), San Andreas (2004), GTA IV (2008), GTA V (2013) and now GTA VI (2026). GTA V is the outlier: at over a decade old it is one of the best-selling games ever, kept alive by GTA Online, which is the main reason it took Rockstar so long to ship a successor.
That long gap is exactly why the question comes up. Thirteen years separate GTA 5 and GTA 6, the widest gap in the series, so for most of a generation of players GTA 5 has simply been the newest GTA in existence. GTA 6 ends that stretch and resets the series to a modern Vice City, in the state of Leonida, with two playable leads, Lucia and Jason.
One caveat on wording: spin-offs and remasters, like the 2021 Definitive Edition trilogy, are re-releases of older games, not new mainline entries. When people ask for the newest GTA, they mean the numbered series, and after November 19, 2026 that answer is GTA 6.
