What is the GTA 6 story?
Official setup GTA 6 follows Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a criminal couple whose easy score goes wrong and drags them into a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. That is Rockstar’s own published setup, and the couple-on-the-run framing is why nearly every preview reaches for Bonnie and Clyde.
Rockstar’s official synopsis, published on the GTA 6 site alongside Trailer 2 in May 2025, is the closest thing to a plot summary that exists. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them; when an easy score goes wrong, they land on what Rockstar calls the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy that spans Leonida and forced to rely on each other to make it out alive. Every plot claim beyond that is fan theory or leak.
Both leads come with on-the-record backstories from their official bios. Lucia’s father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk; fighting for her family put her in Leonida Penitentiary, and the story picks up with her fresh out of prison. Jason wants an easy life after an Army stint, and instead spends his days doing dirty work for Brian Heder, a drug runner in the Leonida Keys. Rockstar also named the supporting cast, from Vice City club owner Boobie Ike to veteran bank robber Raul Bautista; the characters guide covers each of them.
The trailers sketch the arc without spoiling it. Trailer 1, from December 2023, opens with Lucia in an orange jumpsuit across from a prison counselor and closes with her and Jason storming a store together, masked. Trailer 2, from May 2025, picks up on the other side of the wall: Lucia walking out of prison to Jason waiting, an ankle monitor on her leg in later scenes, and the two of them pulling jobs across Leonida.
What Rockstar has not said: how the score goes wrong, who is behind the conspiracy, how the game divides time between the two playable leads, and how long the campaign runs, though leaked estimates exist. No mission names, chapter structure or ending details have been published, and this page stays spoiler free when they are.
