What is the GTA 6 story?
GTA 6 follows Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a criminal couple whose easy score goes wrong and drags them into a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida. That is Rockstar’s own published setup, and a criminal couple forced to rely on each other invites the Bonnie and Clyde comparison.
Rockstar’s official synopsis, published on the GTA 6 site, is the closest thing to a plot summary that exists. Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them; when an easy score goes wrong, they land on what Rockstar calls the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy that spans Leonida and forced to rely on each other to make it out alive.
Both leads come with on-the-record backstories from their official bios. Lucia’s father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk; fighting for her family landed her in Leonida Penitentiary, and her bio says "Sheer luck got her out." Jason wants an easy life, but his bio says that after a stint in the Army he found himself in the Keys "working for local drug runners". Brian Heder’s profile adds that the drug runner lets Jason live rent-free at one of his properties so long as he helps with local shakedowns. Rockstar also named supporting characters, from Vice City club owner Boobie Ike to seasoned bank robber Raul Bautista; the characters guide covers each of them.
The trailers sketch the arc without spoiling it. Trailer 1, from December 2023, opens with Lucia inside a correctional facility, and Rockstar’s bio has her out of prison. Viewers describe Trailer 2, from May 2025, as showing the two of them pulling jobs across Leonida, with an ankle monitor on Lucia’s leg in later scenes; Rockstar has not described those scenes.
Two official videos followed Trailer 2. Rockstar released An Extended Look on August 27, 2026: 26 minutes 48 seconds of in-game PS5 footage. It shows the player switching between Jason and Lucia, including mid-combat, text messages between the two, and Jason taking food from the fridge in Lucia’s apartment; VGC also reports a store robbery with one lead robbing and the other driving. The Launch Trailer, October 15, 2026, is the newest of Rockstar’s four official videos.
What Rockstar has not said: how the score goes wrong, who is behind the conspiracy, how the game divides time between the two playable leads, and how long the campaign runs, though Rob Nelson gave one on-record playthrough time. Rockstar has not published mission names, chapter structure or ending details, and this page stays spoiler free when it does.
What the first two trailers established
The first two trailers, seventeen months apart, each moved the story forward in a specific way. An Extended Look and the Launch Trailer came later.
