How big is GTA 6? Official file-size status and storage plan

By VijayUpdated Jul 16, 2026

Estimate Rockstar has not published the GTA 6 download or install size. We use 150 GB only as a planning allowance before pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, not as a prediction of the final number.

Storage planning chart comparing a 150 GB GTA 6 planning estimate with advertised SSD capacity on a 512 GB Xbox Series S, 1 TB PS5 and 1 TB Xbox Series X
A planning estimate, not an official download size. The 512 GB Series S has the tightest margin; system software also makes the usable capacity lower than the number on the box.

Storage and pre-load planner

Test our 150 GB planning allowance against your current free space and connection. This does not estimate the official GTA 6 size, which Rockstar has not published.

Advertised capacity is context only. System software reserves space.
Find this in your console storage settings.
Use a recent speed test, not the plan's advertised maximum.

The planning allowance fits, with 50 GB left.

  • 150 GB is about 29 percent of this model's advertised capacity.
  • An ideal 150 GB transfer at 100 Mbps takes about 3.4 hours.
  • Wi-Fi, store traffic and installation overhead can make the real transfer longer.

Wait for the official PlayStation or Xbox download listing before buying storage solely for GTA 6.

In depth

There is no official gigabyte figure on Rockstar’s GTA VI page, pre-order announcement, PlayStation listing or Xbox listing. That makes every specific size circulating online unconfirmed. Our 150 GB allowance is a round storage-planning buffer anchored to Red Dead Redemption 2, not evidence that GTA 6 will download at 150 GB or more.

Plan your storage by the console model you own. Current PS5 consoles ship with a 1 TB SSD and support compatible M.2 expansion drives. Xbox Series S models come with either 512 GB or 1 TB, while Xbox Series X models come with 1 TB or 2 TB and support Storage Expansion Cards. System software reserves part of every drive, so the space available for games is lower than the number on the box. On PC, install GTA 6 on an SSD rather than a hard drive for faster loading.

Sony lists GTA 6 as a PS5 Pro Enhanced title on its PlayStation Store page, confirmed when pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, though neither Sony nor Rockstar has detailed how the game runs on a base PS5 versus a PS5 Pro. That does not change the download size, which remains an estimate until Rockstar publishes an official figure.

A USB drive can archive a PS5 game, but Sony says it must be copied back to console or compatible M.2 storage to play. Xbox says a USB drive can store an Xbox Series X and S optimized game, but it must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. This makes a spare USB drive useful for moving other games out of the way without presenting it as a GTA 6 play drive.

Because digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, 2026, a week before the November 19 launch, review storage before that date. Delete or archive games you are not playing. Wait for the official store download listing before buying an expansion solely for GTA 6.

Official Rockstar storage requirements used for context

Rockstar has not published an official GTA 6 size. Its current PC requirements provide context only and cannot predict the new game. Our 150 GB number is a planning allowance, not a forecast or floor.

How much free space to leave, by platform

Current console models offer several SSD sizes, and system software reserves part of each drive. Plan for at least 150 GB free, and more if you keep other large games installed.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published the GTA 6 download or install size. GTA6 Times uses 150 GB as a storage-planning allowance only, not as a confirmed or predicted file size.

How many gigabytes is GTA 6?

The official number is unknown. A PlayStation or Xbox store download listing should provide the first dependable figure before the November 12 pre-load. Until then, clear space without treating a rumor as a requirement.

What is the GTA 6 download size?

Unannounced. Digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, 2026, but Rockstar and the console stores have not posted the download size.

How much storage do I need for GTA 6?

No official requirement exists. We use 150 GB as a planning allowance. Wait for the official store figure before buying an expansion solely for GTA 6.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

Series S is a confirmed launch console, so Rockstar will provide a compatible install. The final size and storage headroom are unknown. The 512 GB model has less free space than the 1 TB model, and optimized games must run from internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card.

Do I need an SSD for GTA 6?

On PS5 and Xbox Series, GTA 6 installs to the console’s built-in SSD or a compatible expansion SSD, both are fine. On PC, an SSD is strongly recommended over a hard drive for much faster loading.
