Rockstar gave the number in its pre-load announcement and its support FAQ: the pre-load "will require up to 212 GB of available space depending on your device". It has not said how much each console needs, so plan for the full 212 GB on any model. Neither the PlayStation Store listing nor the Xbox Store listing showed a size when we read them on November 3.
Plan your storage by the console model you own. Sony’s PS5 page lists the disc console at 1 TB and the Digital Edition at 825 GB. Xbox Series S models have come with either 512 GB or 1 TB, while Xbox Series X models have come with 1 TB or 2 TB and support Storage Expansion Cards. System software reserves part of every drive, so the space available for games is lower than the number on the box. Check it in your console’s storage settings.
A USB drive can archive a PS5 game, but Sony says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage and must be copied back to console storage to play. Xbox says a USB drive can store an Xbox Series X and S optimized game, but it must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. That makes a spare USB drive useful for moving other games out of the way, not for playing GTA 6.
Digital pre-load opens on November 10, 2026: at midnight local time on PS5 and at 12 a.m. GMT worldwide on Xbox. Boxed copies hold a download code, and Rockstar said code-in-box versions should reach retailers from November 12, so a boxed copy needs the same free space once you redeem it. A Gen5 drive gives no speed benefit here, because Sony specifies Gen4x4 for PS5 expansion.
