What is the GTA 6 age rating?
The ESRB rates GTA 6 M for Mature 17+, with content descriptors for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases. Outside the US every board on record rates it for adults: Germany’s USK rates it 18, Japan’s CERO rates it Z (18 and up), the Korean PlayStation Store shows 19+, Australia’s Classification database lists R 18+ for the August 27 demonstration, and the Xbox Store listing shows PEGI 18 for Europe and R18 for New Zealand.
GTA 6 now carries official rating labels on its store listings. In the United States the ESRB rates it M for Mature 17+, a rating that appeared on the store listings and rockstargames.com/VI around October 1, 2026 and is now in the ESRB’s own database. Australia’s Classification database has a record for Grand Theft Auto VI classified R 18+ on August 27, 2026, with the consumer advice "High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use". That record sits in the Demonstration category, and the database has no separate public record for the finished game yet. Two other entries there, rated M and titled Grand Theft Auto VI 6 VI and Grand Theft Auto GTA VI, came through the IARC online tool for other creators’ projects, not for Rockstar’s game. The Xbox Store listing carries the same R 18+ for Australia, plus PEGI 18 for Europe (drugs, sex and violence) and R18 for New Zealand.
Germany, Japan and South Korea have now rated it too, each at its adult tier. Germany’s USK lists Grand Theft Auto VI under USK no. 59552/26 as Keine Jugendfreigabe, its 18 category, with a review date of September 13, 2026, for explicit violence, drugs and criminal role models, and it notes in-game purchases. Japan’s PlayStation Store listing shows CERO Z, for players 18 and up, and the Xbox Store listing names crime and violence as the reasons. In South Korea the PlayStation Store listing shows 19+, the not-for-minors rating; Inven reported on October 16, 2026 that the private Game Content Rating Board made that decision.
How the rating is decided varies by region. In North America the ESRB assigns it: trained raters review footage and a disclosure form from the publisher, then set a category, a set of content descriptors and interactive-element labels. The resulting rating now appears on Rockstar’s GTA VI page and the store listings. In Europe PEGI ratings start from a publisher questionnaire; its public search still had no entry for GTA 6 on October 24, 2026, although the Xbox Store listing shows PEGI 18.
The content descriptors are the useful part for anyone deciding whether to buy. The ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and flags In-Game Purchases. Those are the same seven descriptors the ESRB lists for Grand Theft Auto V, and the official videos already show gun violence, drug running, strong language and adult themes.
For parents, the practical read is simple. GTA 6 is an adult title, closer to an R-rated or 18-rated film than a typical teen game, and the Mature 17+ rating is a content warning, not a formality. Digital storefronts and some retailers apply age verification at checkout, and consoles offer parental controls that can block M-rated titles by account. The Korean PlayStation Store listing shows 19+, the not-for-minors rating, under the GRAC mark. Inven reported on October 16, 2026 that the private Game Content Rating Board made the decision. Either way it is Korea’s top age tier, so only adults can buy it there.
What is GTA 6 rated in Australia?
R 18+. Australia’s Classification database lists R 18+ for the August 27, 2026 Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay demonstration, and the Xbox Store listing also shows R 18+ for Australia. Australia does not use an X 18+ category for games.
Why does the GTA 6 rating mention In-Game Purchases?
The ESRB gives that label to a game that offers digital goods for real money, including subscriptions, season passes and upgrades as well as in-game currency. Red Bull reported that the single-player game launches without microtransactions. Rockstar has not said what the label covers here.
