What is in GTA 6

The ESRB rating covers intense violence and blood, strong language, strong sexual content and nudity, drug and alcohol use, and mature humor, and it also lists In-Game Purchases. This content is the reason the game is aimed at adults.

Set up parental controls

Both consoles let you block Mature-rated games, limit or turn off chat, control spending and set play-time limits from a family account. Pre-load opens November 10, 2026 and GTA 6 launches November 19, so set the controls before then. The steps are below: PS5, Xbox and online safety.

PS5 parental controls for GTA 6

With Age Level for Games on for a child under 17, GTA 6 will not start unless you allow your child’s request. Outside North America set the age your store shows: Germany’s USK and Japan’s CERO rate GTA 6 at 18 and up.

1. Change the Console Restriction Passcode. In Settings, Family and Parental Controls, PS5 Console Restrictions, change the four-digit Console Restriction Passcode from the default of 0000 and keep it secret. It prevents your child from changing parental controls.
2. Limit games by age rating. Go to Settings, Family and Parental Controls, Family Management, choose your child’s account, and use Age Level for Games so games rated above your child’s age cannot start. GTA 6 is rated ESRB Mature 17+, so it is blocked for a player under 17. If your child tries to start it, they can send you a request to make an exception.
3. Restrict chat and shared content. Under Communication and User-Generated Content, choose Restrict. That disables sending text messages and voice chatting with other players, and sharing content your child creates.
4. Set a monthly spending limit. Set a Monthly Spending Limit on the child account. By default it is set to 0, and content your child buys from the PlayStation Store on their account is paid from the family manager’s wallet, so the limit controls how much of your money they can spend.
5. Approve requests case by case. A child can send a request to make an exception for a blocked game. You can allow it in the PlayStation Family app or on the Family Management website.

Xbox parental controls for GTA 6

On Xbox Series X and S everything runs through the Xbox Family Settings app. With the age filter for games and apps on for a child under 17, GTA 6 is blocked unless you approve a request for access. The 17 is the ESRB rating for the US and Canada; the Xbox Store listing shows PEGI 18 and USK 18.

1. Use the Xbox Family Settings app. Create a family group, a free service, and add the child account. Manage your child’s settings in the Xbox Family Settings app or at account.microsoft.com/family. Only a parent in the family group can change a child account’s privacy and online settings.
2. Set content and age limits. Filter or allow games and apps based on your child’s age. GTA 6 is rated ESRB Mature 17+, and Xbox describes Mature titles as content that may be suitable for ages 17 and older, so it is blocked for a player under 17 unless you approve a request for access.
3. Restrict communication and multiplayer. Allow or block your child’s ability to join multiplayer online games, add friends and chat, and choose who can communicate with your child.
4. Set spending and screen time. Use Ask a Parent so you get an email when your child wants to buy a game or app and needs your help to fund it, or set up an allowance to limit what they can buy on their own. Set screen time to control how long and when they can play. Digital GTA 6 pre-orders include a free month of GTA+ that auto-renews; the Xbox Store listing says that month is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content.
5. Filter websites and review requests. Filter or allow websites based on your child’s age, and approve or decline any request your child sends for access to blocked content.

Online safety: chat, spending, scams and privacy

At launch GTA 6 is single-player: the PlayStation and Xbox store listings show 1 player, and Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 online mode. If one arrives, GTA Online is the best guide to what it brings. The console settings above already work.

• Chat with strangers. Public lobbies in GTA Online put players in open voice and text chat with adults they do not know. Restrict it on PS5, or choose who can communicate with your child on Xbox.
• In-game spending. Without a limit, a child can run up real charges. The PS5 Monthly Spending Limit and Xbox Ask a Parent cap it or put it behind your approval.
• Scams and fake giveaways. Crime-game communities attract “free money”, “free account” and modded-money scams that try to phish logins or payment details. Teach your child that no real giveaway needs a password.
• Personal information. Strangers may push for a real name, age, school, photos or social handles. The rule is simple: no personal details for people met in a game.

Our recommendation by age

• Under 13: not recommended. The content is adult, and the ESRB rating is Mature 17+.
• 13 to 16: below the rating, so we would say wait. If you allow it, play it first or together, restrict chat and require approval for spending.
• 17 and over: the rated audience in the US, though several other countries rate it 18. The spending and chat settings are still worth setting.
