In depth

Vice City returns for the first time since 2002, and it returns changed. The original game froze the city in 1986, all pastel suits and cassette decks; GTA 6 rebuilds it as a present-day metropolis of influencers, beach clubs and police helicopters. It is also no longer the whole map: Vice City is one region of Leonida, Rockstar’s take on the entire state of Florida.

Rockstar has named six regions on the official GTA 6 site. Vice City is the Miami stand-in. The Leonida Keys hang off the southern tip, a tropical island chain that Rockstar describes as easy living beside dangerous waters, and where Jason starts the story running product for a drug smuggler. Grassrivers is the wetland region, its name a straight nod to the Everglades, the real river of grass. Port Gellhorn is a faded coastal town of strip malls and abandoned attractions, Ambrosia is sugar-refinery country run by a biker gang, and Mount Kalaga National Park walls off the northern border with wilderness.

The tone is modern Miami and modern Florida at large: neon nightlife, social-media culture and swamp chaos, the last of these shown in Trailer 1 through in-world viral clips of alligators in backyards and arrests on front porches. You play as Lucia and Jason, the series’ first dual-protagonist couple, with Lucia as its first female co-lead in the modern 3D and HD era.

Our interactive map breaks down each region and the real Florida geography behind it, and the trailers are still the best raw look at the world.

Vice City then vs now

The 2002 game and GTA 6 share a city name and not much else. One was a compact period piece, the other is a modern city inside a full state.
