GTA 6 free GTA+ pre-order month auto-renews: stop the charge

Buy the game digitally on the PlayStation Store before launch and you get a free month of GTA+, Rockstar's paid membership for Grand Theft Auto Online. The catch is that the moment you redeem the activation code, auto-renew switches on by default. When that free month runs out, the subscription bills you $7.99 in the US, with £6.99 in the UK and €7.99 across the eurozone, until you cancel it. The bonus is real and worth having. The silent rebill at the end is the thing to defuse.

The fix takes under a minute and you can do it the same day you redeem, without losing the free month. On a PS5, open the PlayStation Store, select the '...' menu and go to Subscriptions, then find GTA+ and turn off auto-renewal. The longer route through the console settings works too: Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Payment and Subscriptions under the Accounts tab, then Subscriptions, where GTA+ sits with the cancel-auto-renewal toggle at the bottom of the screen. Switching it off does not end your free month early. You still get every day you are entitled to. You just will not roll into a paid month you never asked for.

One detail trips people up, so it is worth slowing down on. You are not subscribed the instant you pre-order. Rockstar sends a separate activation code by email, and the auto-renew clock only starts when you redeem that code. That means the smartest move for most buyers is to wait. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, and you have until March 31, 2027 to claim the month. Redeem it the week you actually start playing Online, not in June when there is nothing new to use it on, so the free 30 days line up with time you will spend in the game rather than expiring on the shelf.

This bonus is also strictly a digital-store perk, which is the second thing the box art will not tell you. Buy a physical disc of GTA 6 from a retailer and there is no GTA+ month and no code in the case. Only purchases made through the PlayStation Store before release carry it, alongside the Vintage Vice City pack that ships with every pre-order regardless of where you buy. If the membership is a deciding factor for you, that pushes you toward a digital pre-order rather than a boxed copy.

Treat the free month as exactly that, claim it on your own timeline, kill the auto-renew, and the only thing you pay for is the game.

A reminder on what this membership actually is, since the value depends on whether you play Online at all. GTA+ is the recurring subscription tier for Grand Theft Auto Online, bundling monthly in-game currency, member vehicles and various perks. If you only care about the single-player campaign, the free month is a fine thing to claim and cancel, but the ongoing subscription is not something you need. If you live in GTA Online, that is a separate decision to make with eyes open, on purpose, and not because a toggle defaulted to on.
