Sony's 2028 Disc Sunset Makes GTA 6's Code-in-Box the Norm

Sony made it official on July 1: physical disc production for new PlayStation games ends in January 2028. After that date, new releases ship digitally through the PlayStation Store and as digital codes at retail. Games released on disc before the cutoff are unaffected, and Sony framed the move as following consumer behavior, with digital purchases far outpacing physical.

Sony's own framing was blunt. The announcement called the change "a natural direction" for the company as "the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," and pointed buyers to digital codes at retail as the physical shelf presence that remains. In other words: the box survives, the disc does not, which is precisely the formula GTA 6 shipped with in June.

That decision lands directly on the loudest GTA 6 pre-order controversy. When orders opened June 25, buyers discovered the boxed edition holds a download code, not a disc, and critics, including the Lords of the Fallen 2 publisher's chief executive, called the disc-less box unfair to physical collectors. Eleven weeks before launch, Sony declared the whole format on a countdown of its own.

For GTA 6 buyers nothing changes: the game arrives November 19, 2026, over a year before the cutoff, and its box was never getting a disc. What changes is the framing. Rockstar's code-in-box, an outlier in June, now looks like the shape of every PlayStation retail release from 2028 on, and the Standard edition box becomes one of the last big physical launches of the disc era, even without a disc inside.

The open question is the resale and preservation one that collectors raised in June: a code in a case cannot be lent, resold or archived the way a disc can. Sony's answer, in effect, is that the market has already moved. The debate will not end here, but the direction is now official policy, not speculation.
