GTA 6 ships without a game disc in both the $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate Edition, a decision Marek Tyminski, CEO of CI Games (publisher of Lords of the Fallen 2), called "unfair to studios still backing physical."
In a post on Twitter, Tyminski detailed that at $69.99 retail, physical copies leave developers with just over $26 per unit after retail margins, distributor cuts, and production costs, while digital copies yield around $49 per unit at highest margin. He also noted that Sony's plan to end physical disc support by 2028 could accelerate the shift away from discs.
"Physical delivers far less revenue per unit to developers," Tyminski wrote, adding that CI Games still plans a disc release for Lords of the Fallen 2 but that it is getting harder to justify when physical is under 20% of sales.
Rockstar confirmed earlier that both GTA 6 editions include only a digital download code inside a physical case. The game launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-orders open since June 25. Box-only copies are available to pre-order now.
