Two retailers won't stock GTA 6 over its disc-less box

Two specialist video game stores have publicly drawn a line at GTA 6's physical edition, and the reason is the box itself. Video Games Plus, a North American shop that has traded for more than three decades, says it will not stock the game because its policy is to avoid "physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code." A second physical-media-focused retailer, Loot Box Gaming, has said it will not support the release on the same grounds, citing the preservation of physical media. Both have left a door open: Video Games Plus says it would reconsider if Rockstar ever ships an edition with an actual disc inside.

The objection is about what is, and is not, in the case. Rockstar has confirmed there is no disc version of GTA 6 at launch on November 19, 2026. The boxed copy sold at retail contains a download code, not the game on a disc, which is why critics have nicknamed it a code in a box. For preservation-minded stores, that turns a shelf product into a voucher with cover art, something they argue cannot be resold, lent, or kept playable the way a disc can once servers and storefronts change.

The resale market did not wait for the debate to settle. Multiple outlets report the PS5 and Xbox listings sold out on Amazon US within roughly five hours of pre-orders opening on June 25, and copies quickly appeared on eBay above the $79.99 Standard list price. Reported eBay asking prices have clustered between $120 and $160, a premium for a product that is, functionally, a code most buyers could redeem digitally without leaving home. There is a catch worth flagging before anyone pays a scalper's markup. The free Vintage Vice City Pack, an 80s-themed bonus that includes outfits for Lucia and Jason plus the 1955 Vapid Stanier vehicle, is tied to a genuine pre-order. A resold code purchased second-hand on eBay may have already had that bonus claimed, or may not carry it at all, depending on how the seller obtained it. Paying above retail for a code in a box can mean paying more for less.

The bigger picture is a quiet structural shift. When the boxed copy is just a code, the physical channel loses much of its point, and specialist stores that built their identity on owning and preserving media have little reason to participate. Rumors of a true disc release arriving later, possibly around December, would change that calculus, but Rockstar has not confirmed any disc edition for the November 19, 2026 launch. For now, the two confirmed holdouts are a signal that the code-in-a-box model is meeting resistance from exactly the part of retail that cares most about what a game on a shelf is supposed to be.
