GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a Florida-inspired state full of wildlife.
In depth

Everything on this page is drawn from what the two trailers and Rockstar’s official GTA 6 site actually show, not from a species list, because Rockstar has never published one. Where a creature is only visible in a background frame, we say so. That distinction matters: the wildlife is clearly a feature of Leonida, Rockstar’s Florida, but the roster is read off footage, not confirmed by a menu.

On land, the American alligator is the headline animal, and it is unmistakable. It appears wandering into a department store and lounging by a suburban pool while a wildlife official tries to wrangle it out, a direct nod to real Florida gator encounters. Fans also spotted a green iguana perched on an NPC’s shoulder on a Vice City street, and a wild pig in the background of the flamingo scene. Dogs are present too: a small dog on the beach that fans identified as a Miniature Pinscher, and the Rottweiler breed that appeared in GTA 5 as Franklin’s dog Chop, so a returning dog companion is plausible but unconfirmed.

In the air, flamingos are the standout, shown as a large flock over an Everglades-style wetland, fitting since the flamingo is a Florida icon. The trailers also show a flock of pelicans flying over the ocean right after the yacht appears, and a group of ducks in a swamp scene. Rockstar has not named the full range of birds, so expect more than these three, but only these are visible in the footage.

In the water is where the official site adds the most detail. Rockstar’s Leonida Keys page shows a scuba diver in an ocean populated with sea turtles, moray eels, coral and reef fish, which is the clearest official confirmation of an underwater ecosystem and diving. The trailers add a pod of dolphins near the yacht, multiple sea turtles, a tiger shark in that same scene, and what fans read as a manatee in the Keys water. A shark is confirmed on screen; the exact species mix and whether great whites appear is fan reading, not official.

For scale, the honest comparison is Red Dead Redemption 2, which shipped with roughly 200 animal species and a deep interaction system. GTA 6 is a different setting and Rockstar has confirmed no number, but that precedent is why fans expect a large roster. Two things are specifically not confirmed: hunting as a mechanic, and any full fishing or shark-attack system. Diving is shown; the rest of the wildlife interactions are unannounced.

So how many animals are there? There is no official count, and any specific number you see is an estimate built from the trailers plus the RDR2 precedent. We will update this page with the confirmed roster as Rockstar reveals more before the November 19, 2026 launch.

Trailer-shown means visible in Trailer 1 or 2; official-site means shown on Rockstar’s Leonida Keys page; fan-spotted means identified by viewers in a background frame, not officially named. Nothing here is a confirmed species list.

Frequently asked questions

Are there alligators in GTA 6?

Yes. The American alligator is the most prominent animal in the trailers, shown walking into a department store and lounging by a suburban pool while an official tries to remove it, a direct nod to real Florida. It fits Leonida’s Everglades-style wetlands, and the gator is effectively the mascot of the game’s wildlife.

Does GTA 6 have sharks?

Yes, a shark is confirmed on screen: one appears in the yacht scene, which fans read as a tiger shark given the setting. Rockstar has not named the exact species or confirmed whether great whites or a shark-attack system feature. More sea life is expected because the Leonida Keys and its diving are a shown, official part of the game.

How many animals are in GTA 6?

There is no official count. The trailers and official site confirm alligators, flamingos, pelicans, ducks, dolphins, sea turtles, reef fish, moray eels and a shark, with a manatee, iguana, wild pig and dogs spotted by fans. For scale, Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped with about 200 species, which is why fans expect a large roster, but no number is confirmed.

Can you go scuba diving in GTA 6?

Yes, diving is shown officially. Rockstar’s Leonida Keys page depicts a scuba diver in an ocean with sea turtles, moray eels, coral and reef fish, which is the clearest confirmation of an underwater ecosystem. What is not confirmed is a full fishing or hunting system, so treat those as expected-but-unannounced rather than shown.

Update log

  • 2026-07-07Rebuilt around exactly what the trailers and Rockstar’s official Leonida Keys page show (added moray eels, coral, ducks, iguana, manatee, dogs, wild pig with sourcing labels), added a trailer-vs-official-vs-fan-spotted table and the RDR2 ~200-species precedent, and flagged hunting as unconfirmed.
