Australia's Age Check Rules Could Cost Rockstar AU$49.5M

Rockstar Games could face civil penalties of up to AU$49.5 million, about US$35 million, per breach if GTA 6 falls foul of Australia's age assurance rules, according to a report from Insider Gaming picked up by GamesRadar and others this week. The figure is the maximum penalty available under Australia's online safety framework, whose age check obligations took effect earlier this year under the eSafety Commissioner.

The detail most of the coverage skips: GTA 6 is not an R18+ title in Australia. The Classification Board rated it MA 15+ on June 15, 2025, with consumer advice for strong violence, strong sexual references, nudity and coarse language. That is a step below the R18+ rating GTA 5 carries, and it matters because the strictest age assurance duties attach to R18+ material. The reported exposure therefore centers on the game's online side (what we know about GTA 6 Online), where user interaction can bring a service under the eSafety codes regardless of the rating on the box.

The law itself is not GTA-specific. Australia's online safety rules require platforms and services to keep age-restricted material and features away from minors, with civil penalties that now reach AU$49.5 million per breach. Sony and Microsoft already run account-level age gates on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, and it is not yet clear whether regulators would consider those sufficient for a game with GTA 6's profile.

The report describes a ceiling, not an invoice. What would change that picture: an updated Australian store listing, a platform-level age check added for Australian accounts, or regulator guidance naming interactive features in scope.
