GTA 6 development: how long, when announced, and why it took so long

By VijayUpdated Jul 7, 2026

Confirmed Rockstar Games officially confirmed GTA 6 was in development on February 4, 2022, though internal work is widely reported to have begun years earlier. Trailer 1 arrived in December 2023, Trailer 2 in May 2025, and the game launches November 19, 2026, making it Rockstar’s longest and largest project to date.

In depth

Rockstar publicly confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI was in development on February 4, 2022, in a line tucked into a community update on its own website, saying active development on the next Grand Theft Auto was well underway. That was the first official acknowledgment of the game. Before that, everything was rumor. Reporting and interviews suggest work on the project ramped up after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped on October 26, 2018, so any date earlier than the 2022 announcement should be treated as reported or estimated, not confirmed.

The public rollout was slow and deliberate. The first trailer landed on December 4, 2023, revealing Vice City, Lucia and a 2025 window. A second trailer followed on May 6, 2025. The launch date has since firmed up as November 19, 2026, after Rockstar delayed the game from an earlier May 2026 target announced in late 2025. Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. In between, in September 2022, Rockstar suffered a major hack: a member of the Lapsus$ group, later identified in court as teenager Arion Kurtaj, leaked more than 90 clips of early GTA 6 footage onto GTAForums, one of the largest leaks in game history.

So why has it taken so long? Two reasons. First, scale: GTA 6 is the biggest, most detailed world Rockstar has ever built, and it is widely reported to be the largest team in the studio’s history, led by Rockstar North and spread across Rockstar’s global studios. Second, cadence: modern Rockstar games arrive roughly seven to eight years apart, and Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in between GTA 5 (2013) and GTA 6, absorbing years of the studio’s effort. Rockstar has also said it wants to reduce the crunch that marked past launches, which favors longer schedules.

The upshot: the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 is the longest in the series, but it tracks with how Rockstar now works, one enormous game at a time. Frequently asked questions

When was GTA 6 announced?

Rockstar Games officially confirmed GTA 6 was in development on February 4, 2022, in a community update on its website. The first trailer, the real reveal with footage and characters, came later, on December 4, 2023. Before the 2022 confirmation, a GTA 6 sequel was only rumored and unofficially reported.

How long has GTA 6 been in development?

Rockstar confirmed active development on February 4, 2022, and the game launches November 19, 2026, so it has been in confirmed development for over four years. Internal work is widely reported to have started after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in October 2018, which would make the true development period longer, but Rockstar has never confirmed an internal start date.

Why is GTA 6 taking so long?

Two main reasons. GTA 6 is the biggest, most detailed world Rockstar has ever built, reportedly with the largest team in the studio’s history. And modern Rockstar games come roughly seven to eight years apart, with Red Dead Redemption 2 released in between GTA 5 and GTA 6. Rockstar has also pushed to reduce crunch, which lengthens schedules.

How many people are working on GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published an official figure, but it is widely reported to be the largest team the studio has ever assembled, in the thousands, spread across Rockstar’s global studios and led by Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Because Rockstar has not confirmed a number, treat any specific headcount you see as an estimate.

What was the GTA 6 leak in 2022?

In September 2022, a hacker breached Rockstar and leaked more than 90 video clips of an early GTA 6 build onto the GTAForums message board. It was one of the biggest leaks in gaming history. The culprit, a teenage member of the Lapsus$ group named Arion Kurtaj, was later found responsible in a UK court. It did not change the game’s development plan.
