Best SSD for GTA 6

Rockstar has not published GTA 6’s final download or installed size. If you already need more PS5 storage, these are compatible PCIe Gen4 NVMe expansion-drive options. Do not buy one solely because of an unofficial GTA 6 size estimate.

PS5 compatibility: Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 drive, at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read and a heatsink within its size limits. These are console requirements, not GTA 6 storage or performance specifications. Retailer prices can change between checks.

How to choose

On PS5 the rules are simple: a PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 drive, at least 5,500 MB/s read, fitted with a heatsink under 11.25 mm tall. Sony does not let you run one without a heatsink. There is no point paying for a Gen5 drive, the PS5 cannot use the extra speed, so buy the fastest and largest Gen4 drive you can afford.

The same drive models can be general PC storage, but Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 PC version or PC storage requirements. See our file size evidence guide for what is known and unknown. Sort the rest of your console setup with our best console and system requirements guides.

Frequently asked questions

What SSD do I need for GTA 6 on PS5?

A PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 drive with at least 5,500 MB/s read and a heatsink. The Samsung 990 Pro, WD_BLACK SN850X and Crucial T500 all qualify. Sony requires a heatsink, so get the heatsink version or fit one.

How much storage does GTA 6 need?

Unknown. Rockstar and the console stores have not published the final download or installed size. Do not buy a drive solely from an unofficial size claim.

Do I need to upgrade my PS5 storage for GTA 6?

Not enough information is available yet. Check your current free space and wait for an official installed-size listing before buying storage only for GTA 6.

Is a Gen5 SSD worth it for GTA 6?

No. The PS5 uses PCIe Gen4, so a Gen5 drive gives no benefit there and costs more. Buy the fastest, largest Gen4 drive you can afford.
