GTA RP rules explained

The common GTA roleplay rules in plain English, the same ones most serious servers share. Knowing these is the fastest way to fit into a GTA 6 RP server without getting kicked. Each server sets its own rules; these are the widely used basics.

Informational only. Rules are set by community servers, not Rockstar. We never distribute servers or mods. Always read the specific rules of the server you join.

Stay in character (IC vs OOC)

Play your character, not yourself. In-character (IC) actions stay separate from out-of-character (OOC) chat. Most servers keep OOC talk to specific channels so the story is not broken.

Value of life

Act like your character actually fears for their life. You should not do reckless things just because it is a game, like ignoring a gun pointed at you.

RDM (random deathmatch)

Killing another player with no roleplay reason is banned. There must be an in-character build-up and motive, not a random attack.

VDM (vehicle deathmatch)

Using a vehicle as a weapon to run players down without roleplay is banned, for the same reason as RDM.

New life rule (NLR)

After your character dies and respawns, they forget the events that led to their death and cannot return to that scene. It keeps death meaningful.

Metagaming

Using information your character could not know in-game, for example acting on something you saw on a stream or heard in OOC chat. It breaks fair play.

Powergaming

Forcing actions on others or giving your character unrealistic abilities, like surviving anything or repairing a car instantly. Roleplay should be fair and believable.

Fail RP

Breaking the believability of the world, like driving away mid-arrest with no consequence or treating serious moments as a joke. Servers expect committed, consistent roleplay.

Cop baiting

Deliberately provoking police just to start an action scene, with no real story, is discouraged on most serious servers.

After your character dies and respawns, the new life rule means they forget what led to their death and cannot return to that scene, so death stays meaningful.
